Course 1: Addressing Racism Through Recognition & Response. This course serves to build a community of learners committed to antiracism. It offers antiracism education to help school personnel recognize and respond to acts of racism across the human ecosystem. It serves to interrupt and diminish pervasive cycles of racism over time.

This Canvas 101 course is a broad introduction for participating as a learner in Canvas within the New Mexico Public Education Department (PED). It will explore ways participants enroll, engage, and complete courses in Canvas at the PED.

Participants who complete this course will be able to do the following: Identify the purpose of academic standards and the difference between standards and curriculum. Reflect on the purpose of social studies. Identify the structure of the new social studies standards. Reflect on how the new standards will impact student learning. Identify basic elements of the standards implementation plan.

Course 3: Intrapersonal Racism, the Power of Anti-Racism & Conscious Practice. This course serves to build a community of learners committed to antiracism. Implementing new standards often requires making instructional shifts - some might be small, while others might be more substantial. This module describes the instructional shifts necessary to best implement the new standards.

The new standards embrace culturally and linguistically responsive teaching and learning. This module introduces culturally and linguistically responsive teaching and learning as it relates to the new social studies standards and makes connections to why understanding these tenets is so important for the effective implementation of the standards.

Inquiry is a key element of social studies instruction. Historians, geographers, political scientists, and economists all inquire. The new social studies standards demand a more inquiry-based approach to model the approach within the disciplines of social studies. This module explains inquiry, provides an overview of how inquiry is embedded within the standards and provides an overview of the inquiry arc.

Effective questioning can be a powerful equalizer in the classroom. Inquiry is engaging to students and has been shown to increase student learning when done well. This module helps demonstrate how to scaffold inquiry and use social studies practices, such as the use of primary sources, while doing so.

Performance-based assessment in social studies has the power to engage students in authentic and meaningful ways. This module will identify examples and non-examples of high-quality performance assessments, engage participants in evaluating and creating performance assessments, and expose participants to the use of rubrics to evaluate these assessments.

Creating collaborative civic spaces is all about intellectual safety in the classroom. In this module, participants will explore why creating civic spaces is sometimes challenging and explore tools and resources to create intellectual safety.
